NO SACRED TIMES OR SPACES

Posted in week 6 by jonjon1988 on September 27, 2008

“WHAT!?!?!” That was my brain’s initial reaction to Hughes’ statement, “There are no longer any sacred times or sacred spaces.” I stopped reading to ponder over that because a few sentences before that he said “…there is no longer sacrifice, priesthood, or temple because all have been fulfilled in Christ.” I was like “What does that even mean? Just because Christ fulfilled a prophecy doesn’t mean you have to stop doing something?” But, after a few seconds of thought I realized what Hughes (and the book of Hebrews) was saying: Christ didn’t just fulfill a prophecy but completed a way of doing things. That is why there are no more sacrifices or priests or anything like that. Christ was the final sacrifice and we are all deemed as priests because of Him. Therefore it makes complete sense that worship is a constant thing. Before Christ completed it all (through His death and resurrection) there were designated places of worship (“sacred spaces”) and designated times to worship (“sacred times”), but now, those are not necessary, in fact, they are unbiblical. It would not be right to only worship on the Sabbath or only worship in the Temple. It is commanded that worship be always on our hearts and that our only joy be found in God and His prescence.

I know this sounds like a really cheese-filled question to ask and it sounds like I’m just writing it for the sake of writing it but I’m really only 95% convinced of this so here it goes: do you think this is right?

Yeah I think your dead on it! Worship should be our everyday response to what Jesus did for us on the cross. He didn’t have to sacrifice himself for us… I mean come look at us we don’t deserve it but he did. So worshipping God everyday is showing God that gratitude we have towards for him for what he did for us. Just worshipping one day….which is the Sabbath I think is unacceptable when you think about what Jesus did on the cross. I mean HE DIED FOR US…he deserves every second of my worship…. which is still not enough!

I do agree that there aren’t sacred spaces and sacred times for worship. Worship is supposed to always be on people’s hearts. But, do you think that maybe we still need to have these sacred times and sacred spaces (maybe not spaces) for corporate worship? Now I’m not only saying for corporate worship as in people together worshiping God in general but where people are together and worshiping God in a certain way as a body of Christ through tradition.

What you are saying sounds mostly right (since you asked for a right/wrong answer). I suppose a contrast though. It seems right to say that there are no designated sacred times or spaces (leaving the rest unsacred times or spaces). This reminds me of Paul’s words, “One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike.” If we esteem all days alike, it seems to be because we view them all as sacred – for the purpose of our continual worship. So, the contrast is that we have not abandoned sacred times or spaces totally, we have embraced all times and spaces as usable for sacred purposes.

Insofar as I am correctly interpreting what you are saying, I agree with it. I too have wondered why we don’t still have the obligation to obey the Old Testament ceremonial laws. I know we don’t, but I don’t know WHY we don’t. Then I read Hebrews, and it says makes the point clear that it is no longer necessary to offer sacrifices because what Jesus did. His sacrifice is what those sacrifices were pointing to.

    Amen & halleluyah!

The truth in this blog is one of the songs in my heart & one of my prayers for The Church…that we come into the knowledge of the truth about the New Covenant & how Christ fulfilled the law!

It’s amazing how so many precious Christians quote from Hebrews (10:25) to sustain the Old Covenant churchianity…when in fact, the author of Hebrew’s MAIN intent was to show how superior the New Covenant is to the Old Covenant, & how God has given His ppl a new & better way of worship thru Jesus Christ! It’s amazing how ppl take New Testament Scriptures out of context to support the old wine. The new wine is MUCH better. Oh taste & see!

    God bless you
