CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN WORSHIP
FALL SEMESTER, 2000
3 Credits

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to help students develop a personal philosophy of worship, and to acquaint them with the variety of skills necessary to be well-rounded, effective music ministers in today’s churches and other ministry settings.
II. COURSE OBJECTIVES

A. Understand the various types of worship currently in use among evangelical Christians, and to articulate one’s own worship philosophy.
B. Learn to plan an effective worship service incorporating music, prayer, Scripture, drama, and various types of media.
C. Become acquainted with many of the “non-musical” aspects of being a music minister: sound, recording, drama, and inter-personal relations.
D. Discover and explore resources available to the music minister on the Internet and computer software.
E. Interact with men and women currently active in Christian music ministry to develop a more complete picture of the life of a music minister.

III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A. Attendance at all class sessions and off-site field trips (which will be scheduled during normal class times). Participation in class sessions is vital to the objectives of this class.
B. Completion of readings in the class texts and other books and articles (as assigned), which will be held on reserve in the CIU library.
C. Participation in class discussions and hands-on experiences, and class group blog located at http://worshipclass.wordpress.com. Instructions and requirements will be given in class
D. Completion of written assignments, which will include an analysis of the worship style of the student’s home church, and a worship planning project.
IV. GRADING
30% Class attendance and participation in discussions
20% Completion of reading assignments
50% Written assignments
There will be no final exam in this course.
Classes will be held on Tuesday nights throughout the semester, beginning on Aug. 19 and concluding on December 8. Class will not meet on Tuesday, November 25 because of the beginning of Thanksgiving holidays, you probably wouldn’t show up anyway.
